Stress & the Plastic Brain

Acute stress can sharpen certain kinds of memory, while prolonged stress is associated with remodelling of hippocampal and prefrontal circuits and strengthening of amygdala-based responses. Much of the structural detail comes from animal studies, and in those models several changes reverse when the stressor ends.
